U.S. Gulf Coast to Host Major Clean Ammonia Production Project with New Investment
(P&GJ) — Navigator Holdings Ltd. and Attis Clean Energy are co-investing in Ten08 Energy LLC to develop a clean ammonia production facility on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
The $2.5 million investment, announced alongside Attis' initial funding in May 2024, aims to establish an industrial-scale hybrid blue and green ammonia facility in Texas. The plant is expected to produce 1.4 million metric tonnes of ultra-low carbon ammonia annually, starting in late 2029 or early 2030.
Navigator’s investment includes an option for up to $100 million in preferred equity at the Final Investment Decision (FID) stage, supporting the construction of the facility and related export infrastructure. The project will integrate US-based ammonia production with international transportation using ammonia-powered carriers, serving customers in Europe and Asia.
Clean ammonia is anticipated to play a key role in reducing emissions across various sectors, including power generation and shipping. The development of ammonia-fueled turbines and engines could significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions. The clean ammonia market is expected to grow substantially, with potential to triple global production and meet 46% of shipping fuel needs by 2050.
Navigator CEO Mads Peter Zacho highlighted the strategic importance of this investment, noting its role in expanding the company's energy infrastructure and supporting the transition to cleaner energy. Ten08 CEO Jean Perarnaud emphasized that this partnership will enhance their ability to deliver clean ammonia efficiently, aligning with their vision of low carbon intensity.
