Vanguard Renewables Partners with TotalEnergies to Build Virginia RNG Facility
(P&GJ) — Vanguard Renewables, a leading builder of organics-to-renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities in the U.S., is expanding its footprint with new projects, including a major facility at Oakmulgee Dairy Farm in Virginia.
The anaerobic digester at the farm is expected to produce over 259,000 MMBtu of renewable gas annually and divert more than 105,000 tons of food and beverage waste from landfills or incineration.
This project, part of a joint venture between Vanguard Renewables and global energy company TotalEnergies, will help develop Farm Powered RNG projects across the U.S. “By converting inedible food and dairy cow manure into renewable gas, we’re reducing emissions and creating a sustainable energy source that benefits the environment and local communities,” said Neil H. Smith, CEO of Vanguard Renewables.
The RNG generated at Oakmulgee Dairy Farm will be injected into the U.S. pipeline infrastructure and used to fuel AstraZeneca’s biopharmaceutical facilities in Maryland.
Vanguard's collaboration with TotalEnergies is part of its broader expansion, with two additional RNG projects underway in Wisconsin and Minnesota. “This project exemplifies our ambition to be a leader in the fast-growing renewable gas market,” said Marc de Lataillade, Vice President of Biogas at TotalEnergies.
Oakmulgee Dairy Farm’s owner, Larkin Moyer, emphasized the farm's commitment to sustainability. “We’ve embraced innovation, from partnering with Vanguard to installing a solar array that powers our farm, reducing our carbon footprint,” he said.
In November 2023, AstraZeneca expanded its partnership with Vanguard Renewables to boost RNG production, supporting AstraZeneca’s efforts to decarbonize its operations in the U.S. “Our partnership exemplifies large-scale collaboration to advance sustainable practices and transition to net-zero healthcare,” said Liz Chatwin, VP of Global Sustainability at AstraZeneca.
Vanguard Renewables has been working with U.S. dairy farmers for over a decade, providing them with income through land leases and returning low-carbon biofertilizer to the farms, creating a sustainable farm-to-energy cycle.
