TotalEnergies Demobilizes French FSRU as LNG Demand Normalizes
France’s TotalEnergies will demobilize its Le Havre FSRU as European gas markets stabilize, ending the temporary LNG import capacity added during the 2022 energy crisis.
TotalEnergies will demobilize its floating LNG terminal in the Port of Le Havre, concluding a temporary measure put in place during Europe’s 2022 gas crisis. The company said improved regional supply conditions and minimal recent utilization of the unit led to the decision.
The floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) was deployed at the request of the French government—at TotalEnergies’ own expense—to reinforce national and continental energy security as Russian pipeline imports collapsed. The terminal served as a strategic backup to handle potential winter demand spikes or further geopolitical disruptions.
A recent ruling by the Rouen Administrative Court confirmed that the facility was no longer necessary, aligning with broader stabilization in the European gas market. France and neighboring countries have seen LNG imports normalize as new U.S. and Qatari supply enters the market and storage levels remain strong.
TotalEnergies remains one of the world’s largest LNG players, with a 40 Mt/y global portfolio and access to more than 20 Mt/y of regasification capacity in Europe. The company continues expanding its natural gas share with a stated objective of making gas roughly 50% of its energy mix by 2030.
