Uniper Seeks Permission to Close Key German Gas Storage Site

Uniper Energy Storage has applied to Germany’s Federal Network Agency to decommission the Breitbrunn gas storage facility in Bavaria by 2027, assuring regulators that supply security will not be affected.

(P&GJ) — Uniper Energy Storage GmbH has formally applied for regulatory approval to shut down its Breitbrunn natural gas storage facility in Bavaria by March 31, 2027.

The facility, which has a working gas capacity of 11.5 terawatt hours, was initially flagged for decommissioning in a notice submitted to Germany’s Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) in April 2025.

According to Uniper’s application, the company provided the required documentation showing that the closure of Breitbrunn will not affect the security of natural gas supply for Germany or the European Union.

The application was filed under article 35h of Germany’s Energy Industry Act (EnWG).
