Enbridge’s $4 Billion Gas Pipeline Expansion in B.C. Secures Federal Approval
Enbridge has secured federal approval for its $4 billion Sunrise Expansion, adding 300 million cubic feet per day of capacity to its Westcoast natural gas pipeline system in British Columbia.
(P&GJ) — Enbridge has received federal approval for its $4 billion Sunrise Expansion, a major upgrade to the Westcoast natural gas pipeline system in British Columbia that will add approximately 300 million cubic feet per day of capacity.
The project targets the southern portion of the system and is designed to support growing demand for natural gas across the province, including power generation, industrial use and LNG exports.
The expansion includes new pipeline segments along the existing corridor, additional compression and upgrades to existing facilities.
Construction is expected to begin in July 2026, with the project targeted to enter service in late 2028.
Enbridge said the expansion will strengthen supply reliability during peak demand periods while supporting broader energy security and affordability goals in the region.
The company estimates the project will contribute more than $3 billion to the Canadian economy and create approximately 2,500 construction jobs.
Greg Ebel, Enbridge president and CEO, said the project is ready to move forward following regulatory approval.
“The Sunrise Expansion is a critical natural gas infrastructure project that will support energy security and economic growth,” Ebel said.
Enbridge said it will continue working with Indigenous communities and local stakeholders as construction advances, noting that more than $52 million has already been spent with Indigenous businesses.
Federal and provincial officials said the project will play a key role in supporting industry growth and LNG development in British Columbia.
