PHMSA Opens First LNG Safety Center in Louisiana

PHMSA has opened the first U.S. LNG Safety Center in Louisiana to support research, regulation and operational best practices for LNG infrastructure.

(P&GJ) — The U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has opened the nation’s first dedicated LNG Safety Center of Excellence in Lake Charles, Louisiana, aimed at strengthening safety and regulatory oversight across the growing LNG sector.

The facility, located at McNeese State University, will serve as a hub for research, operational best practices and coordination among federal agencies and industry stakeholders.

PHMSA officials said the center is designed to support safe development and operation of LNG infrastructure, including export terminals and related pipeline systems.

The center will bring together agencies such as the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Energy and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to collaborate on LNG safety, training and regulatory alignment.

The initiative was authorized under the PIPES Act of 2020 and is intended to enhance federal expertise in LNG operations and improve coordination across the industry.

PHMSA Administrator Paul Roberti said the facility will serve as a resource for advancing LNG safety standards.

“It is a resource for expertise in the operations, management and regulatory oversight of LNG facilities,” Roberti said.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the location reflects Louisiana’s role as a key hub for U.S. LNG exports.

“Louisiana is a major center for LNG activity, making it a logical location for this facility,” Duffy said.
