Indonesian Companies Join Foces to Build Natuna-Batam Gas Pipeline
Indonesia’s PLN EPI and Timas Suplindo have signed an LoI to build the West Natuna gas pipeline to Pemping Island, Batam, a key step to expand domestic gas supply and support the country’s clean energy transition.
(P&GJ) — PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with PT Timas Suplindo for the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) of the West Natuna Transportation System (WNTS) gas pipeline to Pemping Island, near Batam in Indonesia’s Riau Islands Province.
The signing, held in Jakarta on Oct. 6, marks a key step in strengthening gas supply reliability for Indonesia’s national electricity system, particularly in Batam and surrounding regions. The project is part of the country’s broader plan to expand natural gas infrastructure and support the transition toward cleaner energy.
PLN EPI’s Director of Gas and Fuel, Erma Melina Sarahwati, said the project will serve as a “crucial bridge in supporting the transition to clean energy based on natural gas, while also strengthening national energy security.”
“This is also the only gas pipeline that will connect gas sources in Natuna to the domestic market,” she added.
Sarahwati noted that the project’s scope includes offshore and onshore engineering, procurement, construction, and installation work. “This project is quite challenging because it involves high-risk sea and land areas. We hope it will proceed safely, smoothly, according to specifications, and be completed on time,” she said.
PLN EPI thanked Timas Suplindo for its commitment throughout the tender process. “We hope that the Contract Discussion Agreement (CDA) process and contract signing can be completed soon, so that project implementation can begin immediately,” Sarahwati said.
Timas Suplindo President Director Sulianto Entong said the company is ready to deliver the project “with the highest safety standards and maximum efficiency.”
“We will carry out all stages, from engineering to installation, professionally to maintain the trust placed in us,” Entong said, adding that the company’s installation vessels, software systems, and in-house experts provide “the confidence to deliver the best results at competitive prices.”
On behalf of the Indonesian government, Anggawira, Expert Staff for Oil and Gas Infrastructure Monitoring and Evaluation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said the project represents “synergy between state-owned enterprises and national business actors in supporting President Prabowo Subianto’s directive on strengthening national energy security.”
“The process has been carried out professionally and transparently, with measurable KPIs. Moving forward, we hope implementation will involve local entrepreneurs and workers in Batam so that the economic benefits can be felt directly by the community,” Anggawira said.
