Atmos Energy Sued Over Deadly Dallas Gas Explosion
A survivor of the deadly Oak Cliff apartment explosion has sued Atmos Energy, alleging failures related to gas infrastructure and line marking. The utility disputes key claims as investigations continue.
A survivor of the fatal gas explosion at a Dallas apartment complex has filed a lawsuit against Atmos Energy, alleging the utility failed to take several steps that could have prevented the incident, according to NBC DFW.
The lawsuit, originally filed in May and updated this week, claims Atmos did not adequately address recurring gas leak issues, replace certain aging pipeline infrastructure and properly identify underground gas lines before drilling work occurred near the site. The filing also prompted a Dallas County judge to order Atmos to preserve evidence related to the explosion and subsequent investigation.
Atmos disputed portions of the allegations, stating that one type of pipe referenced in the lawsuit was not present at the location and that the company had hired a professional line-locating contractor before the explosion. According to NBC DFW, Atmos has also indicated in court-related communications that it is complying with its evidence preservation obligations.
The explosion occurred May 28 at The Clyde apartments in Oak Cliff while Dallas Fire-Rescue crews were responding to reports of a gas leak. Three people were killed and at least five others were injured. The cause of the incident remains under investigation. As reported by NBC DFW, the explosion was Dallas' deadliest gas-related accident since 2018.
