Phillips 66 Colorado Gas Plant to Add 7-MW Waste Heat Power Project

A Colorado gas processing plant is preparing to turn an often-overlooked energy source into enough electricity to support operations while cutting emissions and power costs.

(P&GJ) — Kanin Energy plans to develop a 7-megawatt waste heat-to-power facility at the Phillips 66 Mewbourn natural gas processing complex in Platteville, Colorado, with construction expected to begin later this year.

The project will capture waste heat generated by gas compression turbines and convert it into onsite electricity for use at the Mewbourn facility. The companies said the system is expected to improve plant reliability, lower long-term power costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Under the agreement, Kanin Energy will develop, own and operate the facility, allowing Phillips 66 to utilize waste heat resources without making an upfront capital investment.

Janice Tran, CEO of Kanin Energy, said the project demonstrates how industrial operators can use existing assets to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.

Michelle Hilger, vice president of technical services and innovation at Phillips 66, said the project aligns with the company's efforts to support reliable operations while exploring technologies that improve performance and reduce emissions.

The Mewbourn complex is one of the largest natural gas processing facilities in the Denver-Julesburg Basin and serves producers across Colorado's Wattenberg Field.
