FERC Approves 30 Bcf Expansion at Golden Triangle Gas Storage in Texas

FERC has approved a 30 Bcf expansion at the Golden Triangle Storage facility in Texas, boosting capacity and strengthening Gulf Coast gas storage and pipeline connectivity.

(P&GJ) — The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved a major expansion of Caliche Development Partners’ Golden Triangle Storage (GTS) facility in Beaumont, Texas, adding 30 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas storage capacity.

Golden Triangle Storage, LLC (“GTS”), Caliche’s FERC regulated facility in Beaumont, TX.

The expansion, known as the Spindletop Expansion Project, will include four new salt dome storage caverns and associated surface infrastructure. Once complete, the facility is expected to exceed 60 Bcf of total storage capacity.

Injection capacity will increase to approximately 2.2 billion cubic feet per day, with withdrawal capacity reaching up to 2.5 billion cubic feet per day across eight caverns.

The project builds on earlier expansions approved in 2024, when FERC authorized capacity increases to 28 Bcf through the addition of two caverns, compression and related infrastructure.

“Storage is vital to the natural gas system's operations as it provides seasonal supply, peak demand capability and reliability during outages and extreme weather and helps load balancing. It's also essential to a reliable electric grid. It gives us flexibility to keep the lights on. We would love to see more storage developed around the country to enhance both natural gas and electric reliability.”

In parallel with the expansion, Caliche is advancing several pipeline interconnections to increase access to supply and markets. Construction is underway on connections to Momentum’s Clarity system and ExxonMobil’s Beaumont refinery, both expected to enter service later this year.

Additional interconnections are planned with Kinder Morgan’s Trident Intrastate Pipeline in early 2027 and ARM’s Mustang Express Pipeline in late 2028. The company is also expanding its partnership with Linde to include natural gas delivery via a new pipeline connection to a blue hydrogen facility in Beaumont.

The expanded facility is expected to provide access to gas supplies from the Permian, Eagle Ford and Haynesville basins and offer connectivity to multiple LNG export terminals along the Gulf Coast.
